Hotel de Hallen

Hotel de Hallen is one of the finest boutique hotels in Amsterdam

Hotel de Hallen is part of the former tram depot in Oud-West, an industrial site that has recently been redeveloped. They like to think big in these parts, and this luxuriously modern boutique hotel is no exception.

Clean lines and an industrial look with hints of green here and there, complete with a sun-drenched terrace and a bar and restaurant, De Hallen has plenty going for it indoors. But its surroundings are equally tempting: an organic market, cinema, library and countless cute coffee and food places are all within walking distance.

Oud-West, only the best!

Oud-West’s recent makeover attracts an affluent young crowd that loves anything out of the ordinary. You will be sure to spot a few of Amsterdam’s creatives sipping on G&Ts at the Hotel Not Hotel bar, but the ones staying overnight are truly lucky. The hotel’s uniquely designed rooms are unlike any you have ever seen.

Take your pick – a secret room behind a bookcase, a dizzying crow’s nest, a real tram compartment or even a self-contained Spanish villa with breakfast delivered on your doorstep!

Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel

Looking for alternative accommodation? Spend a night at the Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel

Several hotels claim to have the best view in town, but Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel really does. In the middle of the industrial NDSM shipyard, this 50m high crane looks out over the warehouses below, the water of the IJ on the one side and all of Amsterdam on the other side. Its three former machine rooms are now huge, lush designer suites, complete with champagne breakfast and rooftop jacuzzi.

Pricey and over-the-top maybe, but imagine bathing in the clouds, carrying your wife over the highest doorstep or even bungee jumping from the crane tip. Central Amsterdam is only a short ferry ride away and the NDSM has a vibe that is great to wake up to.

Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy

Spend a night in the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy

Back in the 1920s Lloyd’s monumental roof provided shelter for up to 900 emigrants. Later on it became a detention centre. Far from a prison these days, Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy still oozes history and grandeur. The surroundings are spacious and airy – especially in the restaurant area with its long windows and high ceiling.

The staggering 117 rooms range from one to five stars. The one-star rooms still aren’t cheap, so pay a bit more if you can, and do some research – differences in room size and amenities are huge. But what some of the rooms lack in comfort, the hotel makes up for in character and historical value.

The room might be small, but the view is grand

As the name hints, Volkshotel – The Hotel of the People – caters to every type of traveller.

Housed in a former newspaper building on the rugged Wibautstraat, Volkshotel is a frontrunner to Amsterdam’s urban renewal. Aside from its neat rooms, the hotel has sound studios, exhibition spaces, workspaces, and a jacuzzi with an excellent view.

Volkshotel is also home to one of the city’s best dive bars, DoKa, and the small club Canvas. There is a chance you won’t get to see much else beyond these walls.

Art’Otel Amsterdam

Art installations at Art’Otel

Art’Otel Amsterdam is part of the international chain of hotels known for blending art, hospitality and cuisine. Located by the Central Station, this is an ideal base to explore the heart of Amsterdam. Although the exterior may seem classical – it has one of the most imposing façades on the block – the interior is seriously sci-fi.

Innovatively designed rooms, a library filled with art books, an exhibition space and an ‘interactive art curtain’ used for projecting digital artworks, effectively create a sensory experience. The feeling is underscored by the contemporary artist in residence Joep van Lieshout, Rotterdam’s enfant terrible.

Perhaps a bit too lavish for some, but an experience nonetheless.

Hotel Estherea

Hotel Estherea is all about extravaganza

Hotel Estherea tells a historic tale. Although it has far outgrown its humble beginnings, you can somehow still sense that this used to be a small, 12-room affair run by a single mum. This boutique boudoir oozes extravagance: the predominant colours are lilac and burgundy, decorative wallpaper adorns the walls, and majestic chandeliers set a tone of opulence that most would love immersing themselves in.

The hotel now has over 90 luxury rooms stretching over a few monumental canal houses in Amsterdam’s historic centre. However, they keep an eye on the details, providing a great service is still at the core of Estherea’s approach. Amenities include a library, a fully equipped gym, a cocktail bar, free internet terminals, iPads and bicycle rentals.

No minimalism at The Toren

The Toren family understand that a perfect location – in the middle of the canals, a short stroll away from Anne Frank House and Westerkerk – isn’t enough to guarantee a perfect stay. A plethora of luxurious extras was added to their 17th century mansion on Keizersgracht: splendid designer furniture, lavish chandeliers, delicious breakfast, jacuzzis and romantic canal tours.

Though it comes at a considerable price, you won’t forget anything about your stay anytime soon. Get your hands on the Garden House suite, and you are in for a treat.
