Paris, the city of lights, is a splendid mix of peculiar charm and posh urbanity. One of the most visited cities in the world, Paris is rich in monuments, history, art, architecture, food, fashion, and overall beauty, all of which easily evokes the most romantic emotions. Paris is split in half by the Seine River with the northern side of the river being called the Right Bank and the southern area referred to as the Left Bank. The city is divided into 20 different zones called ‘arrondissements’, with the Notre-Dame Cathedral being the ‘centre’ of Paris. Because of its many distinct zones or neighbourhoods, it can be overwhelming to decide where to stay in Paris.
Louvre – Jardin des Tuileries (1st arrondissement)
This area upholds the luxury, romance and mystique which the city is known for. Many of the popular Paris attractions are within walking distance in this neighbourhood. If you fancy 5-star luxury accommodation, stay at the luxurious Le Meurice, located on Rue de Rivoli, just minutes from the Louvre. Or choose the ultimate glitz and glamour experience when you stay at the Ritz Paris. For budget-friendly boutique accommodation, consider Hotel La Tamise, just across from Jardin des Tuileries. If you want a splendid vista of the Louvre, Tuileries gardens and the Eiffel Tower as you lie on your bed, there is no better place than Hotel Brighton.
The Marais (3rd and 4th arrondissement)
Marais is a cool, trendy, neighbourhood, with narrow, lively streets full of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. It is also the most LGBTI-friendly of all the neighborhoods with the highest concentration of gay clubs in Paris. Amid the art galleries and fashion shops in northern Marais, consider staying at the gorgeous and intimate, Hotel du Petit Moulin or the friendly and casual, Hotel Jules & Jim.
The Ile Saint-Louis (4th arrondissement)
The smaller of the 2 islands in the middle of the Seine River, Ile Saint-Louis is a quiet, peaceful area with 17th century architecture, several restaurants, bakeries and ice-cream shops, and slightly more expensive accommodation. Enjoy the recreated ambience of 18th century Paris if you stay at Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais on rue Vieille-du-Temple. For a budget-friendly option in a prime location, stay at the Hotel Jeanne d’Arc le Marais.
The Latin Quarter (5th arrondissement)
The Latin Quarter is one of the busiest and liveliest parts of the city with a hectic nightlife. This neighbourhood is a maze of small and charming 1000-year old streets dotted with second-hand book shops, international food options, and plenty of cafes and bars. The large student population due to several universities in the area, makes the Latin Quarter a very affordable neighbourhood with a hip and youthful vibe. Enjoy spacious rooms, a courtyard garden and a spa pool beneath gold-stone vaults, when you stay at the Hotel La Lanterne. You also have the small boutique hotel, Hotel Les Dames du Pantheon which is located on Place du Pantheon, an ideal spot from where you can explore some key Paris attractions on foot.
Saint Germaine-des-Pres – Odeon (6th arrondissement)
This is a classically Parisian neighbourhood with sidewalk cafes, bakeries, art galleries, churches and museums, and is a convenient central location to make your base while you explore Paris. Enjoy luxurious rooms and beautiful décor if you stay at the Relais St. Germaine. Stay in the super stylish, Hotel Atmospheres located in the heart of St. Germaine des Pres on the Left Bank or consider the L’Hotel on Rue des Beaux Art with designer bedrooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
If you are staying in the Marais area, look at Hotel Exquis which is walking distance from some of the hippest bars and restaurants in this area. Hotel Crayon Rouge in downtown Paris is another budget-friendly option and inspires guests with its radical colour schemes, printed wallpapers and a very chic ambience. At Le Demeure hotel located on a leafy boulevard, urban chic meets Haussmann architecture to offer beautiful, inexpensive accommodation. Another excellent cheap place to stay is the St. Christopher’s Inn Paris Canal. It is an award-winning hostel facility close to Gare du Nord Eurostar station and boasts a waterfront terrace overlooking the Canal St. Martin.
